It takes a long time to build a 3D space in AE, so I will test ideas in 2D in Photoshop first. I have collected a number of pictures of cranes, water towers, buildings, and various industrial and technological stuff. Things of course look ,ore crowded in 2D, and the different layers would end up on different planes in AE. I just thew some of these pictures together with stormy skies and various effects to test sort of a dark "cranescape":
